Behind closed doors, cruelty reigns. And some secrets are too shameful to survive...

England, 1850. Irene Denton lives in quiet torment. To the citizens of Lindenfell, her mother is a kind, generous lady—but behind closed doors, she's a cruel and controlling tyrant. Stories have been Irene's only refuge, and when the possibility arises for Lindenfell to have a library of its own, she sees a fragile chance at freedom from her mother's merciless grasp.

Solomon Shaw carries the weight of a shameful secret—one so burdensome he's convinced no respectable woman could ever accept him. He longs to make his widowed father proud, but when the only other person who knows his secret arrives back in town, Solomon's carefully constructed life begins to crumble. Exposure means ruin. Silence means living a lie.

Irene and Solomon are both trapped—by cruelty, by shame, by secrets that threaten to destroy them. As meddling interlopers and long-buried truths close in, they must decide:

Will they find the courage to break free from the chains that bind them—or will fear, guilt, and control crush any hope of redemption?

How lovely books were. What constant companions they had been to her, all her life. How joyous it was to lose oneself inside their covers, to travel far away within their pages. To be free—at least for a little while.

What Readers Are Saying

I always enjoy reading Edwina’s novels. The storylines are good, but even more than that they highlight God’s goodness to us in Christ Jesus in a way that is both encouraging and challenging, bringing Bible-based truths to life. I always leave with much to ponder, apply and be thankful for.

Such a heartwarming tale of love and redemption! Through pain, loss, and deception, Irene and Solomon embark on a journey where they learn important truths that impact their hearts and the world around them. I was challenged spiritually observing their personal growth and ultimate willingness to trust God above all else. Enjoyed this story and the others in this series very much.

This was the first book for me by this author. I appreciated her writing style and care with the story. It shows how one can live in even difficult circumstances and find God's answers for themselves along the way, if they ask Him. I liked that aspect very much.
The author did a good job of capturing hard things - and did so well at evoking what that was like for the heroine. Her characters' actions and responses, both males and females, seemed true to me, based on people I know in real life who have struggled with the same kind of things. I became invested in the story and wanted to see how their faith in God would help them through these challenges and I appreciated the author's ability to write about these subjects with sensitivity and grace. I highlighted some meaningful passages as I went along.
