The Library
How can she 'keep the peace' when there's never been any?
England, 1850. Bookworm Irene Denton lives with a painful secret. To the citizens of Lindenfell, her mother is a kind, generous lady—but behind closed doors, she's a cruel and controlling tyrant. Stories have always been Irene’s refuge, so when the possibility arises for Lindenfell to have a library of its own, Irene is hopeful she’ll soon have a safe place to escape her mother’s merciless grasp.
Solomon Shaw enjoys helping his widowed father run Lindenfell's chemist shop. He wants nothing more than to make his father proud, and to find the courage to win Irene's affections. But the burdensome guilt of a shameful secret has convinced Solomon she can never be his. When the only other person who knows his secret arrives back in town, Solomon fears his hopes will be shattered—and his secret exposed.
Amidst untold pressures, Irene and Solomon kindle mutual hope for a future together. Yet, meddling interlopers and long-buried truths soon signal the end of their story.
But is the book entirely closed on the hope they once had? Or is a new chapter of peace and love still to be written?
How lovely books were. What constant companions they had been to her, all her life. How joyous it was to lose oneself inside their covers, to travel far away within their pages. To be free—at least for a little while.
What People Are Saying
I always enjoy reading Edwina’s novels. The storylines are good, but even more than that they highlight God’s goodness to us in Christ Jesus in a way that is both encouraging and challenging, bringing Bible-based truths to life. I always leave with much to ponder, apply and be thankful for.
Thank you, Edwina Kiernan, for writing such real stories, filled with characters who have made mistakes but have strong faith! I loved this story so much! Can't wait for book 4!
The Library is a Calderon of emotions and Biblical Truth. Any one who has been through heartache or knows a person who has endured hardships will find this novel great encouragement. This is one book I will read again & again.
This is an amazing novel that gives an interesting twist on the rules of Victorian society. The story itself is very engaging and hard to put down. I would recommend Edwina Kiernan's books to anyone who enjoys a good story with plot twists that keep the reader engaged.
I love this author. Her novels are filled with God’s love for us. Such wonderful characters and soo realistic. I cried several times for it spoke volumes to me.
Such a heartwarming tale of love and redemption! Through pain, loss, and deception, Irene and Solomon embark on a journey where they learn important truths that impact their hearts and the world around them. I was challenged spiritually observing their personal growth and ultimate willingness to trust God above all else. Enjoyed this story and the others in this series very much.
This was the first book for me by this author. I appreciated her writing style and care with the story. It shows how one can live in even difficult circumstances and find God's answers for themselves along the way, if they ask Him. I liked that aspect very much.
The author did a good job of capturing hard things - and did so well at evoking what that was like for the heroine. Her characters' actions and responses, both males and females, seemed true to me, based on people I know in real life who have struggled with the same kind of things. I became invested in the story and wanted to see how their faith in God would help them through these challenges and I appreciated the author's ability to write about these subjects with sensitivity and grace. I highlighted some meaningful passages as I went along.
